Westmeath U16 League

Athlone 6-12  Kinnegad 6-15

On a beautiful summers evening as the score line will suggest this was one of the most exciting games of football anyone will have the pleasure to attend in Westmeath this year. End to end stuff from start to finish with the lead changing hands on a number of occasions with the winner not emerging until the awarding of an injury time penalty. The forward movement by both teams was varied and clinical at times and never ordinary.

Kinnegad went ahead straight from the off with the first two points but Athlone responded with a goal and a point to take the lead back. Then it was Kinnegad who had a spell of dominance. Despite scoring three goals in the first half from Aidan Byrne, Peter Ryan and Richie Greene Athlone went in at half time four points down.

Athlone were first out of the blocks in the second half with a point from a free and a goal from Sam Omokuro. Just like the first half it was points and goals from both teams another from Richie Greene and one from Stephen Ward for Athlone with no one getting more than a two point lead. With time up it was Athlone who were ahead by a point but as Kinnegad attacked a late penalty was awarded which the impressive two footed Kyle Cooney slotted low to the left.

A brilliant game and if these two teams meet in the championship I would encourage all to attend.
