Westmeath U16 County Final

Athlone 0-7 The Downs 2-9

Athlone's under 16 Boys were defeated by a strong Downs side in the Division 1 Championship final in Ballynacargy on Saturday.  Despite a brave effort from the Athlone lads, they found themselves up against an excellent Downs team and were unable to recreate the free-flowing football that had marked their run to the final.

The Downs dominated possession from the opening whistle but it took until the 10th minute for them to open the scoring, when Athlone goalkeeper John Duddy did well to push a goalbound effort over the bar.  The Downs were on top throughout the field but a combination of wasteful finishing and some great goalkeeping from Duddy meant that it took them another 10 minutes to add to their account, with a goal from a rebound after another great save from the Athlone keeper.  Athlone then finally got on the scoresheet with points from Benny Martin and Kevin Rowan, but another Downs point meant that Athlone trailed by 1-2 to 0-2 at the break.

Trailing by just a goal after playing second fiddle for majority of the first half, Athlone would've felt that they were still in with a great chance of winning the game as the second half started.  However these hopes were dashed within seconds of the restart as The Downs scored their second goal after a great move straight from the throw-in.  Two immediate points meant that they had matched their entire first half total in the opening 90 seconds of the second and opened up an eight point lead.   Sean Dowd opened Athlone's second half account from a free but the Black and Amber continued to dominate and added another point, before Duddy pulled off a great double save to keep the Shannonsiders in the game.  Mark Egan pulled back a point but The Downs finally found their shooting boots and struck the next three to lead by 2-9 to 0-4 as the game entered its final five minutes.  To their credit, the Athlone lads never gave up and finished strongly with points from Mark Egan, Benny Martin and Donagh Prendergast to leave the final score Athlone 0-7 The Downs 2-9.
