U14 Championship
Athlone v Mullingar Shamrocks

Athlone u14 girls recorded a wonderful victory over Mullingar Shamrocks in Pairc Chiarain on Saturday last 7th March in the opening round of their division 1 championship. After winning division two last year this is Athlone's first year in division 1 for a number of years so it has hard to predict how things would go for them. The game was played with a strong wind blowing straight down the pitch and although Athlone lost the toss we were delighted when Shamrocks decided to play against the wind in the first half. Athlone started strongly and had early points from Ellen O'Connell, Brionna Geoghegan (3) and Nadia Molloy. Shamrocks replied with two points of their own but then Athlone got into their stride and had scores from Grace Halligan (2-1), Niamh McGann (1-1), Nadia (0-1) and Brionna (0-1) and the final score of the half was a goal from Ellen O'Connell. Half Time 4-9 to 0-2.

The second half was a much closer affair but after establishing a good lead the girls were never going to let Shamrocks back into the game. Scores from Brionna 0-1, Ellen 1-0 and Grace 0-2 were matched by six points from Shamrocks to leave the score at the final whistle Athlone 5-12 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-8. It is still very early in the season and the girls have a lot of work to do in the months ahead to ensure that they hold their own in the top division but if they play with the same passion and commitment as they did on Saturday they will have another year to remember in the blue and white.
