U16 league Championship
Athlone 5-12 St. Marys Rochfortbridge 3-10

Athlone U16's travelled to St. Mary's Rochfortbridge on Monday evening 11th August for the 2nd round of the championship. After a good win in the first round Athlone were hoping for a good performance against division 1 opposition and maybe nicking a win that would qualify them for the quarter finals of the division 1 championship. On the night we had a fantastic game and unbelievable heart and commitment. Playing with a strong wind in the first half Athlone were struggling to get into their stride but eventually settled down and combining good team play picked off some very nice scores along with hitting the crossbar on 1 or 2 occasions as well. St. Mary's were awarded a very dubious penalty near the end of the half and the teams were level at 2 - 5 apiece at the break.

With minds now totally focused Athlone started very brightly in the 2nd half and picked off 5 unanswered against a very strong wind. With a total never say die attitude the whole team and subs stuck to the task and emerged winners on a scoreline of 5 - 12 to 3 -10.

It would be unfair to pick out any individuals players on the night as the whole squad put in a huge performance. With injuries to some players and others on holidays this was a very important win in the development of this squad of players.

Best wishes to Kevin Temple and Josh Beaumont on quick recoveries from their injuries sustained recently.
