Athlone 6-10 St Mary’s Rochfortbridge 2-9

Our U16 Boys qualified for the Championship Division 1 semi-final with a hard-fought victory over a game and skilful St Mary’s,
Rochfortbridge side in Monday night’s quarter-final in Páirc Chiaráin on Monday night.  Despite the slippery underfoot conditions, both sides served up an exciting game with a host of great scores.

Athlone opened the scoring with a point from Mark Egan after a great team move, but the visitors then struck 2-2 in three minutes.  Goals from Benny Martin and Donagh Prendergast (either side of a great penalty save from the St Mary’s keeper) had the Blues back in it.  Rochfortbridge struck the next point but a third goal, this time from David Cleary after a great move involving James Finlass and JJ Offorjama, saw the home team lead by a point.  JJ followed this up with a point of his own but Rochfortbridge fought back to draw level as half time approached, however Athlone finished strongly with points from Donagh Prendergast and David Cleary to lead by 3-4 to 2-5 at the interval.

Athlone started the second half as they had finished the first with another Cleary point, but this was quickly matched by a similar St
Mary’s score.   Josh Beaumont was the next player to get on the scoresheet with a point, which was followed by two from Mark Egan, the
first of which came after an unbelievable solo run.  Rochfortbridge struck some good scores of their own during this period so there was still only two points between the sides with 10 minutes remaining.  The Athlone defence and midfield were gradually getting on top and supplying great ball to the forwards, who looked very dangerous as they attacked.  A Benny Martin point from a free stretched the lead, before Egan finished another great solo run to the net to finally put some daylight between the sides.  Josh Beaumont then intercepted an attempted pass from a Rochfortbridge defender to score another goal that finally killed of the visitors’ challenge, and a point from Mark Tallon and another Beaumont goal brought the scoring to an end and saw Athlone victorious on a scoreline of 6-10 to 2-9.
