Under 16 Championship:
Athlone 2-13 Killucan 2-04

Athlone u16's qualified for the quarter final of the championship (Div 1) by topping their group with a hard fought win over a physically bigger Killucan side in Pairc Ciaran on Friday evening last. Athlone started brighter and had 4 points on the board before killucan struck for 1-1 to draw level. Athlone to their credit didnt panic and with our half backline on top and Cathal Stacey putting in a man of the match performance at full back they went ahead by 3 again. Second half had a similar start to the first one Athlone opening up a 5 pt lead before a rebound from a brilliant save by Conor Devaney fell to a Killucan player for a goal. This was the wake up call Athlone needed and they played some fine football opening up a 4 pt lead courtesy of a well taken "soccer" style goal from Richie Greene. With 5 mins remaining Kieran Rigney sealed the win when he was on the end of a good Sam Omokuro run to slot home Athlones second goal. 2 more points followed to finish the Scoring.

Final Score 2-13 to 2-4. Conor Devaney gave another fine display between the sticks particularly in the second half with a couple of fine saves. Athlones defence was on top for the most part with Jack Ruane and Sean Dowd in particular mopping up anything at the back. Half backline of Tadgh Prendergast Conor Melinn and Fabian Cooke attacked at will. Midfielders Kieran Rigney and Sam Omokuro who had an excellant second half were comfortable. Ryan Gaffey Richie Greene and Josh Dolan were always on top in the half forward line while full forward line Conal Edmundson Fionn Dowd and Sean Keenan gave plenty of options inside. Scorers R Greene 1-5 (3f), R Gaffey 0-3 (1f), Kieran Rigney 1-0, Conal Edmundson 0-2, Josh Dolan, Fabian Cooke, Sam Omokuro 0-1 each.
