Div 1 Championship
Athlone 4-11 Shannon Gaels 2-8
Our U16s continued their unbeaten run in Division 1 of the league on Wednesday night, with a well deserved 4-11 to 2-9 victory over a dogged Maryland/Tang team. Athlone started this game very slowly, and struggled to match the visitors work rate in the first half. Despite first half goals from Benny Martin and Luke Kelly, as well as points from both Martin and Kelly along with Shane Allen and Kieran Colclough, Athlone found themselves trailing by two points at the break, 2-5 to 2-7.
However Athlone emerged from the break a much improved side and went on to totally dominate the second half, restricting the visitors to just two points in the second half. Having been out worked in the first half, the midfield pairing of Kieran Colclough and Sean Dowd dominated the middle of the pitch in the second half, while the half forward line of Luke Kelly, Joseph Offorjama, and Mark Egan caused endless problems for the Maryland/Tang defense. The Athlone defense also tightened up in the second half, conceding just two points in the thirty minutes. This was due in a large part to the introduction of Niall Doolan to the half back line at half time. A goal each for Mark Egan and lively corner forward Donnagh Prendergast, as well as well taken points by Joseph Offorjama and Shane Allen, capped off a fine second half performance, before second half substitute Dylan Keogh rounded off the game with a well taken point.
That's four wins from four in the league for this ever improving side, however their toughest test is yet to come when they face a highly fancied The Downs team next week.
