County Final
4th October in Mullingar
Athlone v Rochfortbridge

Athlone u14 girls completed an excellent year when they defeated Rochfordbridge in the division 2 championship final in Mullingar on Saturday evening. After winning the league and the Feile shield and remaining undefeated during the group stages of the championship, Athlone were favourites for the title and they duly delivered with a comfortable victory in this game. We dominated from the start with a couple of early points from Grace Halligan and then following a good save from the Rochfordbridge goalkeeper Lauryn Mitchell was on hand to score a goal from the rebound. Another point from Grace was followed quickly by a goal from Karla McManus which left us well in control. The 'Bridge' then scored their first point of the game but Karla replied with two points and then her second goal before the final scores of the half were two points for Rochfordbridge. The half time score was 3-5 to 0-3 in favour of Athlone.

The Athlone girls knew that the 'Bridge' were going to put in a strong second half and were prepared for this. A number of outstanding saves from Aoife Temple in goal along with determined defending from all the backs but from Alannah Reynolds in particular restricted the 'Bridge' scoring chances but they scored four unanswered points. However Athlone then regained control in midfield and with Brionna Geoghegan, Karla McManus and Lauryn Mitchell in dominant form in the forward line the scores flowed again with a point from Brionna and goals from Karla and Lauryn. The final scores of the half were 1-2 from Rochfordbridge. The final score was Athlone 5-6 Rochfordbridge 1-9. This was a great display of teamwork, skill, determination and hard work and a well deserved result after 8 months training. There was a great welcome home for the girls in the club and the traditional drive around town with the cup will be remembered for a long time to come. Congratulations to all the girls and enjoy the winter break and we hope to see ye all again in early 2015.

Congratulations and thank you to Mentors Seamus Mitchell and Damien McIntyre for all their hard work and commitment which paid off yet again.
