St Loman's 3-4 Athlone 2-11

Tuesday 13th May 2014

The Athlone U14 girls played their first championship match of the year when they travelled to Mullingar to take on St Loman's on their astro turf pitch on Tuesday. We were short five of our regular starters but we need not have worried as we still had a panel of 27 girls to choose from. St Loman's started brightly and scored two early points. However Athlone gradually got into the game and scored points through Grace Halligan and Kelly Brill before Brionna Geoghegan finished a super Athlone passing move to the back of the net. Two further points were added through Amy Joyce and Grace Halligan. Loman's then showed they were not out of it and scored a good point before a very lucky goal for Loman's just before the break left the half time score at St Loman's 1-3 Athlone 1-4.

Athlone were very quick out of the blocks in the second half and began to pass the ball accurately and quickly and St Loman's struggled to keep with us. Another point from Grace was followed by a second goal for Brionna and Kelly Brill scored a brilliant point from a tight angle and this was followed by another point from Brionna. Athlone were seven points up at this stage and looked in control but a lapse of concentration at the back let Loman's score a very soft goal. However the girls were not going to let this game go and straight away went back up the field and points by Grace, Niamh Halligan, Ally Mahon and Amy Joyce put us firmly back in control. St Loman's finished the game with a point from a free and were then awarded a goal despite the fact that the forward took at least 10 steps before taking her shot. However all it did was give a better score line for St Loman's as at the final whistle Athlone were the victors on a score line of 2-11 to 3-4. This was a determined and skilful display for the girls and all those involved should be very proud of the performance.
