U14 Girls
Sunday 10th May
Athlone v Rochfortbridge
The U14 girls completed their second championship game in 3 days when they travelled to take on Rochfordbridge on Sunday 10th May. Playing against a very strong wind for the first half Athlone started brightly with Grace Halligan scoring three quick points. Rochfordbridge then scored 1-1 of their own but they were not to score for the remainder of the game. Points from Kate Fallor, Niamh McGann and Ellen O'Connell were followed by 1-1 from Grace to leave the half time score at 1-8 to 1-1.
The second half started with Athlone in complete control but very poor shooting along with poor decision making meant they did not score for the first nine minutes of the half. However when Kate Fallor broke the deadlock the confidence came back and further scores from Brionna Geoghegan (2-3), Nadia Molloy (1-2), Grace Halligan (1-4), Niamh McGann (0-1). The final score was Athlone 5-20 Rochfordbridge 1-1.

Overall this was not one of the girls better performances despite the huge margin of victory. Rochfordbridge were missing a large number of players and struggled to field 15 players. The girls missed too many scoring opportunities and gave the ball away too often and there is still a lot of room for improvement and I am sure the mentors will be working on this aspect of the game in training in the coming weeks. Best for Athlone on the day were Nicole Murray and Ella McGlynn in defence and in attack Eadaoin Martin, Kate Faller and Niamh McGann all worked very hard for the hour. The next game is a home championship game against Kinnegad.
