Div 1 Championship
7th May in Streamstown
Athlone 3-10 Kilbeggan 2-7

Our U14 girls travelled to Streamstown on Thursday 7th May to face Kilbeggan in the third round of the division 1 championship. The game opened brightly with both teams playing good football. Kilbeggan opened with a point and Athlone replied with a point each from Grace Halligan and Brionna Geoghegan.  Kilbeggan levelled the score from a free. Athlone then dominated the remainder of the half and scored from Grace, Brionna, Nadia Molloy and Niamh McGann to leave the score at the break Athlone 2-5 Kilbeggan 0-2.

The second half opened as the first had and both sides scored three points each with the Athlone scores coming from Grace and Niamh. However Kilbeggan then seized the initiative and after sustained pressure began to cut through our defence and added 2-2 to their total. At that point there was only one point between the sides and Athlone looked to be in trouble with five minutes remaining. However when you have the courage, determination and skill of Brionna Geoghegan on your side there is no need to worry. Brionna was having a great game anyway but managed to reach a new level and drove on the rest of the team. She carried the ball through the whole defence and set up Grace for a point. She repeated the feat one minute later but this time crashed the ball to the back of the net. Nadia completed the scoring with a fine point. The final score was Athlone 3-10 Kilbeggan 2-7. Apart from Brionna there was a super performance in goals from Rebecca Duddy who was playing her first game at this level. Other great performers include Wiktoria Sewerniak, Nicole Murray, Blessing Imade and Nadia Molloy.

This game will stand to this young group and the fact that they came away with a win will prove to them that hard work and ability always pays off in the end. A special mention must go to the girls who were on a school tour in Mayo but rushed back to play this game. Many thanks to you all.
