U10 Boys v Tubberclair

Athlone U10 Boys recorded their second win in as many days in the Castledaly tournament as they overcame a spirited fightback late in the game from the Tubberclair boys. It was a marvelous game of football and great credit goes to both teams for the level of skill on display. We lost count of the number of blocks and clean tackles made by both sets of players and to see the basic skills being displayed at such a young age bodes well for the future for both clubs. Playing against the gale in the first half the Athlone defence performed heroics to restrict Tubberclair to just three points while the Athlone forwards managed to raise three white flags of their own to leave nothing between the sides at the break. Into the second half and Athlone started well and tacked on a couple of lovely points before netting for the one and only green flag of the day. As the wind started to recede the boys from Tubberclair piled forward to try and rescue the game but the Athlone defence held firm and held out for a win on a scoreline of 1-08 to 0-4. Next up is the third match of the group against the hosts, Castledaly, on Sunday 18th at 11a.m.
