Athlone 7-13 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-6

Our minor boys got their championship campaign back on track with a comprehensive win over Mullingar Shamrocks last Wednesday evening in Springfield.

In a venue that is notoriously difficult to come away from with two points, a devastating opening 10 minutes from the Athlone lads set the tone from the outset. Four well-taken goals, one apiece from Enda Daly, Josh Beaumont, Shane Allen, and Stephen O'Connor were sandwiched in between 2 points from Kieran Colclough and one from Luke Kelly. Shane Allen added a point off the left foot before Josh Beaumont netted again after some great work from Deba Okodugha. Shamrocks rallied to score a well-taken goal themselves, however further points from Benny Martin, Colclough and two from Enda Daly stretched Athlone's lead. The champagne football continued with a brilliantly worked goal to finish the half - Shane Allen won a great kick out before threading the ball through the eye of a needle to Donagh Prendergast who fed Josh Beaumont to round off his hat trick with aplomb on the stroke of half time.

In comparison to the free flowing football of the first half, the second was a little disjointed as Athlone used their full bench, although they had a great start when a goal in the opening minute from Enda Daly brought their tally to seven for the evening. Further points followed from Beaumont, Colclough, Diarmuid Martin, Eamon Martin, and JJ Offorjama, (on his long awaited return from injury), to round off the scoring, although Shamrocks to their credit refused to wilt and the game was much more competitive in the second half.

Best for Athlone in a great team performance were Conor Rushe, Stephen O'Connor, Josh Beaumont and Enda Daly, while Rytis Liaukevicius pulled off some excellent saves when introduced. The subs used also made sure to give the management a selection headache ahead of their final group game against Killucan, which the Athlone lads need to win to secure qualification for the Division One quarter-final.  This game is scheduled for Killucan at 7pm on Monday, August 21st.
