Athlone v Delvin/St Pauls

Athlone Ladies played a league game versus Delvin / St Pauls in Athlone on Fri 24 April at 7.30 pm. This game was a close encounter with both sides displaying great commitment and playing a good standard of football. Athlone started well and scored an early goal from a long delivery which deceived the goalkeeper with the ball creeping in under the cross-bar. The first half was a low scoring affair with both defences playing well and the half-time score was Athlone 1- 3 and Delvin/St. Pauls 0-5.

Athone started the second half strongly and scored a number of good points from play.  The Athlone defence was holding strong and the greatest threat came from the visitors counter-attacking play. The Athlone players determined attitude, team spirit and team effort were commendable. The forwards are moving with more purpose and the good deliveries and approach work resulted in a very good goal and a number of well worked points from play.

There were some very good individual displays, but it was the team spirit and the combined effort that prevailed. All the substitutes were used in this game and they played very well. While there is work still to be done, this young team is continuing to improve and the players are to be commended for their excellent attitude and determination. The final score was Athlone Ladies 2-10, Delvin / St Pauls 1-6.
