Athlone 3-6 St Loman's 1-12

A stirring second half comeback gave Athlone a share of the spoils in their top of the table Junior Championship clash with St Loman's Mullingar in Páirc Chiaráin on Friday on Friday night.  Athlone started brightly and two Joe Fallon frees gave them an early lead, but they struggled to turn possession into scores and the visitors took control as the half went on and opened up a 1-6 to 0-2 point lead at the break.  An early Joe Fallon point followed by a well-taken Mickey Greene goal gave Athlone hope, but three points from the Mullingar men kept daylight between the sides.  Richie Greene kept Athlone in touch with a free but another Loman's point gave them a six point lead with 10 minutes to play.

Substitute Emmet Collins then brought the home team right back into with a goal from a close range effort, and when Conal Sheeran added a similar score a minute later, the sides were somehow level.  A great save prevented Mickey Greene from adding another goal, but Joe Fallon put Athlone ahead with a point after a well-worked move from the subsequent 45.  St Loman's drew level again with a point of their own, before another fine save from the their keeper denied Richie Greene what surely would've been the winning goal.  Instead it was the visitors who looked to have won it when they added another point as the game entered its final stages, but they failed to close out the game and one final Athlone attack yielded a free, which the ever reliable Joe Fallon converted to earn his side a deserved draw on a scoreline of 3-6 to 1-12.  Thanks to the club stalwarts who made themselves available for this game at short notice, while it was also great to see Rory Donnellan return to action after illness.

ACFL Div 4

Athlone 4-12 Caulry 4-21

A stunning first half scoring spree from Caulry, which saw them score an amazing 3-14 from play, condemned Athlone to a defeat that leaves their future in Division 4 in the balance.  This was an extraordinary game in which all of the visitors' 4-21 came from play, while 4-1 of Athlone's total of 4-12 (which would've won any other game they played this season) came from the two goalkeepers we used on the night.  Athlone now need to win their final game league match against Castledaly to have any chance of avoiding a return to Division 5.

Athlone:  Conor Devaney (1-0), Jack Ruane, Tom Egan, Shane Galvin, Eoin Jordan, Andy Lynam, Kieran Rigney, Aidan St John, Danny Reid (0-1), Tadhg Prendergast, Joe Fallon (0-1), Eoin Fahey, Darren Costello (3-1), Mickey Greene (0-1), Richie Greene (0-8) Subs Used:  Benjy Bannon.
