Athlone 0-10 Rosemount 1-11

A late Rosemount goal in this Championship Section B game played in Pairc Chiaráin condemned our junior men’s team to their second defeat of the campaign and severely damaged their chances of qualifying for the knock-out stages of the competition.

Two points in the opening minute from David Fagan and Conal Sheeran gave Athlone a great start, but the visitors settled after that and struck the next three points, before another Sheeran point brought Athlone level.  Rosemount regained the lead from a free but Athlone dominated the rest of the half and, despite missing a good goal chance, struck four points in a row from Joe Fallon (0-2), Tadhg Prendergast and Richie Greene to lead by 0-7 to 0-4 at the break.

David Fagan started the second period as he had the first, with a point straight from the throw-in, however Rosemount responded well and halved the deficit with two points from play.  Richie Greene pointed to restore the home side’s three point advantage with 20 minutes to play, but the middle third of the half was to prove costly as four consecutive Rosemount points, all coming directly from turnovers after poor passes were intercepted, gave them lead as the game entered its final stages.  Emmet Collins did bring Athlone level, but they were unable to fashion another score and instead fell behind to the game’s key score when the visiting corner-forward got in behind the defence to finish emphatically to the net with just two minutes remaining.  Despite late pressure, Athlone were unable to find an opening for an equaliser and an insurance point from the visitors in injury time made the final score Athlone 0-10 Rosemount 1-11.
