Athlone 6-13 Tubberclair 1-14
Our junior men made it two wins from two over the weekend when they accounted for Tubberclair in Tubberclair on Sunday evening, although the final result was flattering for the visitors, who were second-best for long periods of the opening half.  Just as against Kinnegad two days previously, early goals from Sam Omukoro and Richie Greene their side an ideal start, but the home side dominated most of the half as they punished Athlone defensive indiscipline with a succession of pointed frees.  Indeed, it took several good saves from sub goalkeeper Conor Devaney, who replaced the injured Rytis Liaukecivius early on, and a third major from midfielder Patrick Munnelly to give Athlone a fortuitous four-point lead at the break, 3-4 to 0-9.

The visitors began the second half with much more purpose and teamwork and points from Richie Greene (0-3), Enda Daly (0-2) and Joe Fallon stretched the lead to 10 before Tubberclair opened their account.  A coolly taken fourth goal from Niall Doolan made the game safe, while two more excellent strikes from Richie Greene to complete his hat-trick late-on put a gloss on the scoreline as Athlone eventually ran out 14 point winners on a scoreline of 6-13 to 1-14.

Athlone:  Rytis Liaukevicius, Shane Galvin, Andy Lynam, Rory Donnellan, Eoin Jordan, Emmet Collins, Niall Doolan (1-0), Patrick Munnelly (1-0), Michael Byrne, Enda Daly (0-2), Joe Fallon (0-3), Deba Okodugha, Dylan Lynch, Sam Omukoro (1-1), Richie Greene (3-6)  Subs Used: Conor Devaney, Shay Byrne, Cathal Joyce (0-1).

The above results mean that Athlone finish runners-up in Group 3 and so will play the winners of Group 4, St Loman’s, in the first round of the playoffs.  This match is scheduled for 7pm on Thursday evening in Tubberclair so please come out and support the lads in this crucial game.
