Fe 14 Feile Girls

Athlone U14 girls completed a very successful weekend on Sunday last when they won the Feile Shield  at a very windy Kinnegad. The competition started in St. Lomans on Saturday afternoon when Athlone faced Kinnegad in the first game. After a very close fought contest Athlone came out on top on a scoreline of 2-1 to 1-3. We then faced Ballycomoyle and in a one sided game Athlone were victorious by 1-7 to 0-0. This meant that we qualified for the semi final on Sunday afternoon against Killucan. A strong wind blowing straight down the pitch made good football very difficult and although the girls did very well Killucan were comfortable winners. This placed Athlone and St Loman’s against each other in the Shield final. St Lomans started strongly against the wind and scored a goal after two minutes. However Athlone gradually worked their way into the game and scored a great goal through Brionna Geoghegan and this was followed immediately by two further goals from Ashley Cuffe and Chloe Moran. The first half scoring was completed with a point from Lauren O’Connor with a well taken point to leave the score at half time Athlone 3-1 Kinnegad 1-0. We knew we had it all to do against the wind in the second half but the Athlone girls defended magnificently with Robyn Coyle and Caoimhe Mannion leading the way. However, gradually St Loman’s whittled down the lead with a goal and two late points leaving Athlone one point ahead with only a couple of minutes to go. The girls threw their bodies on the line to defend this lead and were thrilled to hear the final whistle and were victorious by 3-1 to 2-3. Well done to the 30 girls involved and to the mentors and the many parents that supported the team. Another great day for Athlone GAA.
