Athlone 7-9 Milltownpass 4-13

After the sides had exchanged early points, Stephen O'Connor struck Athlone's first goal with a superb solo effort, which was followed soon after by a lovely first time finish from Conor Rushe.  The visitors then settled and, with Athlone struggling to win their own kickouts, kicked five unanswered points to reduce the deficit to the bare minimum.  A pair of well-taken points from Bryan Hughes settled the home side again and another brace of goals, from O'Connor again and Dylan Rushe, stretched the lead again, although Milltownpass finished strongly with three late points to leave Athlone ahead by 4-3 to 0-9 at the break.

Andrew Beaumont got in for Athlone's fifth goal just after the break, but they were then grateful to keeper Kenny Davies for a couple of fine saves as Milltownpass went looking for goals to get back into the game.  Eamon Martin added another point, before Milltownpass did get their first three-pointer, but Athlone responded well with two points each from Hughes and Beaumont.  Milltownpass kept in touch with their second goal and a couple of points, but two goals in quick succession from Stephen O'Connor and another Beaumont point finally made the game safe for the hosts, although two further Milltownpass goals late on took some of the gloss of the scoreline.

Overall, this was a fine display from Athlone, with some lovely passages of attacking football, although a tendency to go for goals rather than tacking on points to keep the scoreboard ticking over when ahead, let Milltownpass back into the game on more than one occasion.
