ACFL Division 1

Athlone 1-5 St Loman's 1-9

Our senior men welcomed St Loman's to Páirc Chiaráin for this division 1 game on Friday night, but paid the price for a disappointing first half performance when, despite a brave second half comeback, they were defeated by four points by the defending league and county champions.

Athlone started brightly and created several scoring chances in the opening five minutes, including a good goal chance that was blocked, but were unable to take any, and fell behind to a quick brace of scores from Shane Dempsey.  Two more points from Dempsey and one from Ken Casey put the visitors five points up, before Alan Gaughan opened Athlone's account with a fine score, however St Loman's responded with a goal from Dempsey and two further points to go nine ahead.  Darren Costello got Athlone's second point from a free, but the Mullingar men had the final word of the half when another Dempsey point left the half time score 1-8 to 0-2 in their favour.

Despite being understandably deflated coming off the pitch at the break, the Athlone lads regrouped and brought a new level of intensity to their performance in the second period and it looked for a long time that they were going to pull off a great comeback.  Darren Costello opened their second half account from a free, followed by two excellent scores from Alan Gaughan and Jordan Marshment, before Jack Quinn blasted to the net to leave just a goal between them with fifteen minutes still to play.  However, despite plenty of possession, the home side were unable to add to their total in the final quarter and instead it was St Loman's who completed the scoring with a late free making the final score 1-9 to 1-5 in favour of the visitors.
