U14 Girls
Athlone 6-17 The Downs 2-7

Our U14 Girls completed their 8th victory in a row last Tuesday in the U14 championship when they outclassed The Downs in Pairc Chiarain. We started in excellent fashion and got into an early lead with scores coming regularly and we were 3-2 to 0-0 ahead after 10 minutes. The Downs regrouped and scored 1-2 but then Athlone raised their game even further and through some excellent fielding, passing and team work added 2-10 without reply to leave the score at half time Athlone 5-12 The Downs 1-2. The second half was a bit of a non event as the girls took their focus off the game and although they scored 1-5 they also conceded 1-5. There were too many inaccurate passes, too many wrong decisions made in possession, slack defending and poor shooting. However as it was a very humid evening and the girls knew that the game was won it would be wrong to blame them for taking it easy. The final score was Athlone 6-17 The Downs 2-7. There is only one group game remaining and we are already certain of topping the group and claiming a home semi final. If the girls perform as they did in the first half for the remaining games it will take a special performance to beat them. But the semi final is not for almost two months so it is vital that the girls continue to train hard to be ready for what will be a tough semi final. I did not name any individual player as all 18 girls that took part contributed to a wonderful victory. Roll on Moate in the final group game on 21st July.
