Leinster League Division 1

Stradbally (Laois)  2-08

Athlone                   1-05

Athlone welcomed a strong Stradbally side to Pairc Chiaran for the second round of the Leinster league on Friday evening last. Despite a promising start for the home side it was the Laois men who led at the break and found scores easier to come by in the second half to run out comfortable winners.

Athlone had the aid of a stiff breeze in the opening half and went two points to the good before Stradbally got off the mark. The home side were winning plenty of ball at this stage but squandered a number of good chances in front of goal.

Stradbally  slowly began to take control and a well worked goal put them in to a lead they would never lose. A super goal from the boot of Aidan Byrne just before the short whistle left just a point between the sides with Stradbally leading 1-5 to 1-4.

Stradbally, with the aid of the elements were quick to stretch their lead on the resumption and when they hit their second major there was no way back for the gallant Athlone side.

Daniel Reid hit Athlone’s only point in the second half but to their credit they never threw the towel in.

This was a great learning experience for the talented Athlone side who have a chance to get back to winning ways when they welcome Offaly side Shamrocks to Pairc Chiaran on Friday at 6.30pm.
