Athlone 2 – 15   The Downs 3 – 8

Athlone Minors completed their group matches, and qualified for the quarter finals, with a convincing 2 – 15 to 3 – 8 victory over The Downs last Thursday, 23rd August, at Pairc Ciaran.

Athlone were on top at all stages and were much the more the skilful side and it is probably true to say that the atrocious weather conditions affected this young Athlone side more than the opposition.    Athlone lead a 1 – 11 to 2 – 4 at half time with an early goal from Sam Omokoro, four points from Seamus Byrne, three points from Aidan Byrne with other scorers being Ritchie Greene, Stephen Ward, Charlie McMicken and Neill Scally.

In the second half Aidan Byrne notched a further goal with two more points each from Seamus Byrne and Ritchie Greene.

Again, the younger players played exceptionally well particularly in the absence of a number of key players such and Eoghan O’Reilly, Tommy McCoy and Ray Connellan with notable performances from Darren Cassidy, Michael Cunniffe, Shane Galvin and a welcome return to Mark Halligan.

Athlone await completion of other group matches before learning their opposition in the quarter finals.
