Athlone 1-11 Coralstown-Kinnegad 1-11

Athlone Minors got their Minor Championship campaign off to an excellent start with a hard earned draw away to Coralstown/Kinnegad on Thursday evening in torrential conditions.  The result is all the more notable owing to the large number of under 16’s fielded by Athlone due to the unavailability of a number of players.  It was however a terrific all round performance particularly as Athlone trailed by 2 points at half time.  In the first half, Charlie McMicken scored an exceptional goal with points added by Ritchie Greene, Seamus Byrne, Charlie himself and 2 points from Aidan Byrne.

Coralstown/Kinnegad had the better of the exchanges in the early part of the second half.  However, a late rally from Athlone with points from Ritchie Greene and Aidan Byrne and 3 exceptional points from Seamus Byrne meant Athlone were completely on top at the final whistle and had there been another couple of minutes play, Athlone would surely have triumphed.  A controversially disallowed point with three minutes to play would have given Athlone victory.  However, in all the circumstances a draw was probably a fair result to both sides.

Given the excellent effort by all concerned it would be unfair to single out any individuals and this result puts Athlone in an excellent position to move on to obtain a playoff position.
