ACFL Div 5: Athlone v Ballynacargy

posted 26 Apr 2015, 11:44 by Athlone GAA

Athlone 2-21 Ballynacargy 0-10
The Athlone Junior team had a good win in their first home game of the season on Friday night last in Pairc Chiaran.  Having secured a tough away draw in their first game at St. Lomans, Athlone were determined to take all of the points on offer on Friday night, and duly obliged with an empathic second half performance.  Playing into a strong wind, Athlone dominated possession in the first quarter but failed to take advantage on the scoreboard, kicking some poor wides. Ballynacargy took control for the remainder of the half, kicking some good scores to lead at half time by 0-8 to 0-7.

Athlone were a different outfit after half time, with Jack Quinn and Jordan Marshment dominating in the middle sector and Deccie Byrne, Joe Fallon and Cathal Joyce winning every ball in the full forward line. Byrne’s first goal eight minutes into the second half was the catalyst for Athlone to open a gap, and by the time he scored his second six minutes from the end, Athlone had kicked 11 unanswered points to move out of sight.
