ACFL Div 4

Athlone 7-18 Tubberclair 0-7

Our junior men’s team improved their chances of staying in division 4 of the ACFL with a very impressive performance against a game but inexperienced Tubberclair team in Páirc Chiaráin last Thursday.  The scheduling of the match for midweek during the third-level exam period meant that both sides were missing several regulars, which had a greater impact on the visitors than it did on the town team.  That said, Athlone did play some excellent football, with brilliant goals from Richie Greene, Dylan Lynch, Luke Kelly and Ryan Gaffey, as well as superb points from Joey Jordan, Colin O’Leary, Patrick McGettigan, Andy Lynam and Joe Fallon, while it was also great to see Cathal Joyce make a scoring return to the blue and white.

Athlone take on Milltownpass in the final round of the league in Páirc Chiaráin next Sunday (throw-in TBC) with another win required to ensure that we avoid relegation and play in division 4 again next season so a similar turnout and performance will be required for that game.

Athone:  Conal Sheeran, Eoin Jordan (0-3), Daniel Lynam, Patrick McGettigan (0-1), Andy Lynam (0-1), Emmet Collins, Colin O’Leary (0-1), Luke Kelly (2-1), David Fagan, Tadhg Prendergast, Dylan Lynch (1-2), Benny Martin, Cathal Joyce (0-2), Joe Fallon (0-1), Richie Greene (3-4)  Subs Used:  David Cleary, Aidan St John, Sean O’Brien, Ryan Gaffey (1-2).
