ACFL Division 4

Athlone 3-12 Moate All Whites 1-8

Our junior men’s team made it two wins from two games in Division 4 when they defeated Moate All Whites in an entertaining game played in Páirc Chiaráin on Friday night.  While the final score may make it look like a comfortable victory for Athlone, it was anything but, and it took a late scoring burst to seal victory for the home side.

A first minute Kieran Colclough point, followed by a well-taken Richie Greene goal, gave Athlone an ideal start, but Moate responded well with a goal of their own, before Sean Dowd made it three goals in as many minutes with when he fisted home from close range after a good passing movement.  The sides then exchanged points for the remainder of the half with four Moate scores answered by excellent efforts from Kieran Colclough, two from Jack Quinn and Ryan Gaffey to leave Athlone 2-5 to 1-4 ahead at the break.

In contrast to the frenetic opening to the first half, the early stages of the second period were a much quieter affair, with a pointed Moate free the only score of the first 10 minutes.  Ryan Gaffey eventually opened Athlone’s second half account from a free, and after the visitors had replied with an excellent individual score, Athlone enjoyed a good spell with an Andy Lynam point and two Kieran Colclough frees putting some some daylight between the sides.  Again Moate came back into the game and two points, the second of which could easily have been a goal, left just four points between the sides with five minutes still to play.  Fortunately for the hosts, they were able to take advantage of a strong subs’ bench as their opponents tired and points from midfielders Kieran Colclough and Diarmuid Martin, followed by a superb solo score from corner-back Danny Lynam finally made the game safe.  Veteran substitute Joe Fallon put the icing on the cake when he slotted home the third goal in injury team to seal a flattering 10 point win his side, final score 3-12 to 1-8.
