Athlone 0-12 Milltownpass 0-9

A third consecutive win guaranteed our junior men’s place in next year’s ACFL Division 4 as they eventually overcame the determined challenge of Milltownpass in their final round league match, played in Páirc Chiaráin on Tuesday evening.  A couple of early points from Andy Lynam and David Fagan gave Athlone a good start, but they failed to build on that and were trailing to four consecutive Milltownpass points before fine points from Joe Fallon and Michael Doolan brought them level.  MIlltownpass did regain their lead soon after, but late frees from Fallon and Ryan Gaffey gave Athlone a half time lead of 0-6 to 0-5.

The visitors regained the initiative with two points in the first minute of the second half, and although Dylan Lynch equalised with a well-taken effort, Milltownpass continued to force the pace and went two clear with a brace of frees.  Athlone looked to be in trouble as the game entered its final quarter, but fortunately they were able to use a strong subs’ bench to freshen things up as their opponents tired.   A second point each from Dylan Lynch and Ryan Gaffey evened things up again, before Sean Dowd gave the home side the lead with a superb individual score.  Another young sub, Paddy McGettigan, doubled the advantage with an equally fine score, and despite some late Milltownpass pressure as they pressed for a match-winning goal, the Athlone defence held firm and Ryan Gaffey made the game safe from an injury time free as Athlone held on for the win they needed to ensure their Division 4 status for another year.
