ACFL Div 1: Athlone v St. Lomans

posted 9 May 2014, 14:06 by Athlone GAA
Athlone suffered their second defeat of their ACFL Division 1 campaign when they were comprehensively outplayed by current county champions St. Loman's in Pairc Chiarain on Bank Holiday Monday.

Despite playing with the aid of a very strong wind in the first half, Athlone were on the back foot from the beginning and St Loman's had two points on the board before Mickey Greene opened Athlone's account on five minutes with a great point from the wing.  Shane Dempsey restored St Loman's two point lead before Joe Fallon converted a free to reduce the gap to a minimum again.  At this stage, however, Athlone were struggling to cope with the slick interplay of their opponents and St Loman's scored a quickfire 1-3 to stretch their lead to seven points, 1-6 to 0-2, approaching the 20 minute mark.  Two great points from Mickey Greene and Paul Bannon briefly brought Athlone back into  the game but St Loman's finished the half the stronger and added two points to leave the half time score 1-8 to 0-4 in the visitors' favour.

Facing into the strong wind for the second half, Athlone needed a good start but it was the Mullingar men who scored the first three points of the half to increase their lead to 10 points.  At this stage, St Loman's threatened to run away with the game but a well taken goal from the lively Mickey Greene, sandwiched between two frees from Joe Fallon and a point from Conal Sheeran, reduced the gap to four points and gave Athlone some hope.  Indeed, had Mickey Greene found the net with another good chance, Athlone could've put Loman's under pressure for the last 10 minutes.  As it was, the visitors regrouped and added two points to break Athlone's momentum.  A Joe Fallon point from play just about kept Athlone in it but a superb goal from the dangerous Shane Dempsey finally sealed a deserved win for the dark blues, who added two more fine points to leave the final score Athlone 1-8 St Loman's 2-15

Scorers:  Mickey Greene 1-2, Joe Fallon 0-4, Paul Bannon 0-1, Conal Sheeran 0-1
