ACFL Division 1:

Athlone 1-18 Tyrrellspass 1-13

Our seniors gained their first points of the 2019 league campaign when an impressive performance away to Tyrrellspass gave them their first win of the season after an entertaining game played in chilly conditions in Tyrrellspass on Saturday evening.

The sides were level 0-3 apiece after an evenly-matched opening 10 minutes, with Athlone’s scores coming from Eoin Maher, Ryan Gaffey and Josh Beaumont, before three points in five minutes from a Kieran Colclough free, Jordan Marshment and Gaffey again gave Athlone a lead that they would not relinquish.  With the visiting defence very disciplined in marshalling the threat of the Tyrrellspass attack, three further points from the impressive Gaffey and another Colclough free, followed by a Jack Quinn goal from close range gave Athlone a 1-10 to 0-6 half-time lead.

After the hosts had opened the second half scoring in the first minute, Jack Quinn was unlucky not to add a second goal when his effort from a tight angle came back off the crossbar, but two more Gaffey points stretched Athlone’s lead.  However, just as it looked like they were set for a comfortable victory, a fumble in the small square after a 45 had dropped short let Tyrrellspass in for a goal which brought them right back into the match.  Danny Reid responded for Athlone with an excellent point, but two further Tyrellspass points reduced the gap to just four with 15 minutes still to play.  A fisted effort from Jack Quinn gave Athlone some breathing space but the home side had the bit between their teeth and scores from influential forwards Ger Egan and Denis Glennon brought them back to within three with five minutes remaining.  A fine score from Richie Greene after a quick counter-attack looked to have made the game safe for Athlone, but another Tyrrellspass free had just one score between them as the game entered injury time.  As they went looking for the equalising goal, they forced a 45 that dropped dangerously into the Athlone goalmouth, but the Athlone defence held firm and launched another counter-attack that ended with a Josh Beaumont point that finally guaranteed the win.  After Athlone turned over the subsequent quick kickout, Ryan Gaffey fittingly had the last word with his ninth point of the game to give his side a deserved five point win on a final score of 1-18 to 1-13.

Next up for Athlone is a crucial game against reigning County Champions Mullingar Shamrocks in Pairc Chiarain on Friday evening, with the throw-in provisionally scheduled for 7.30pm.  Our Division 3 team then travel to Mullingar to take on Shamrocks on Saturday, again at 7.30pm, while our Division 6 team are due to play neighbours Garrycastle in Garrycastle on Sunday morning with an 11.30am start.
