ACFL Division 1

Athlone 0-5 Mullingar Shamrocks 2-12

After earning their first league win against Castledaly on Sunday, our seniors travelled to Springfield for their midweek game against Mullingar Shamrocks in confident mood, but never got going as they slumped to a disappointing defeat against an impressive home side.

Athlone got off to a bad start when they conceded a point straight from the throw-in, and things got worse a minute later when the Mullingar got in for their opening goal.  John Connellan opened the visitors’ account from a free, but Shamrocks replied almost immediately to lead by 1-2 to 0-1 after five minutes.  After this bright opening spell, the game went scoreless for the next 20 minutes, as both sides struggled in the wet and windy conditions.  Paul Bannon did eventually add Athlone’s second score after 25 minutes, and Athlone would’ve been happy to go in at half-time trailing by only three points after playing poorly, but they were dealt a blow when they conceded a soft second goal just before the break, while a Shamrocks point on the stroke of half time left seven points between the sides, 2-3 to 0-2.

John Stapleton gave Athlone hope when he finished off a fine move in the opening seconds of the second period, but they were unable to close the gap any further and a Mullingar point restored their seven-point advantage.  A Jack Quinn point kept Athlone in touch, but that was as good as it got for them and five unanswered points from the hosts between the 10th and 20th minutes put the game beyond them.  John Connellan added the visitors’ fifth and final point from a free, but a further three points in the closing minutes sealed a very comfortable win for the home side on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-5.

This was a chastening defeat for Athlone after played so well against Castledaly three days previously, and they know that they will need a vastly improved performance in their next game away to Milltownpass this coming weekend (time & date TBC).
