Athlone 0-9 Garrycastle 3-13

Our seniors finished what had been a relatively positive league division one campaign with an extremely disappointing defeat to neighbours Garrycastle in the derby game played in Garrycastle on Friday evening.

Following an evenly matched opening 10 minutes, after which the home side led by 1-2 to 0-3 thanks to an early fisted goal (Athlone's scores coming from John Stapleton (0-2) and Paul Bannon), Garrycastle took control and three points from frees, followed by their second goal, gave them an eight point lead.  A point from Fergal Murray stemmed the flow slightly for Athlone, but Garrycastle were soon back in the ascendancy and added a third goal, before a point with the final kick of the half gave them a 3-6 to 0-4 lead at the break.
The home side picked up where they left off with a score straight from the throw-in, and after Darren Costello had opened Athlone's second half account with a free, they added three points in quick succession to make the game safe with twenty minutes still to play.  Athlone added late points from Daniel Reid, Paul Bannon (0-2) and Darren Costello, but they were unable to make any inroads into the Garrycastle lead as the home side added a further three points of their own to seal a very comfortable 3-13 to 0-9 win.
