Athlone 0-11 Rosemount 1-8

Our seniors returned to competitive action when they hosted Rosemount in the opening round of Division 1 of the ACFL in what was the first match under our newest set of floodlights on the David Allen Memorial pitch.

After a slow start from both teams, Athlone settled first and Danny Reid opened the scoring after five minutes when was set up by a good pass from Joe Fallon.  Mickey Greene then added two points in quick succession, the first a solo effort after a determined run, the second when he finished off a superb move that had been started deep in the Athlone half by Matty Darling, who had been released by the Westmeath U21s to play.  Another returning county player, Noel Mulligan, stretched Athlone’s lead further with another fine point from play, before a Joe Fallon free put Athlone five points to the good at the midway stage of the half.  Rosemount then got on the board with two frees, while a long range free from Mulligan was matched by another free from the visitors to leave just three points between as half-time approached.  Athlone then spurned a great goal chance that would have doubled their lead and they were made pay for this miss when a flowing Rosemount attack led to the equalising goal just before the break.

Despite a superb Jordan Marshment point from out near the sideline to give Athlone an ideal start to the second period, the visitors dominated possession in the opening 10 minutes of the half.  Fortunately, for Athlone, their finishing did not match their approach play and instead the next score came from Mickey Greene for Athlone, after another fine team move.  Rosemount did eventually find their shooting boots and three quickfire points gave them the lead for the first time.  The home side responded well to falling behind and raiding corner back Fergal Murray brought them level again, before a free from sub Richie Greene put them back in front.  Conal Sheeran then pulled off an excellent save from a close range effort to prevent Rosemount adding a second goal, but two superb points from play gave them a one point advantage as the game entered stoppage time.  It looked at this stage like Athlone were going to start the campaign with a defeat, but they managed to launch one final attack, which led to Danny Reid slotting over the equaliser in the 62nd minute to leave the final score Athlone 0-11 Rosemount 1-8.
