2012 Feis Cup Final
Pairc Chiarain
Athlone 1-07 Bunbrosna 0-03
The 2012 Feis Cup Final was played in Pairc Chiarain on Sunday last between Athlone and Bunbrosna. The conditions were very heavy and it was great credit to both teams for the quality of the game that was played.  Athlone won on a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-3 points, the scoreline flattering the Athlone side as the goal came late on after Bun had a number of uncharacteristic wides. Both sides were dusting off the winter cobwebs but it was pleasing to see some of the fine scores from play, particularly in the first half when a brace from the evergreen Joe Fallon were matched by a superb strike from full back Paul McEnroe. Prior to this Bunbrosna's task was made more difficult when their full forward was shown a straight red card for striking Damo Kelly after the ball had been played.
At the break the scoreboard showed that the home side led by 0-5 to 0-2. With a three point lead and a man extra, one would have expected Athlone to pull away but as is often the case, the team with 14 men pushed on, and at times it was hard to see which side had the extra man. Were it not for some wayward shooting from the Bunbrosna forwards, particularly from the dead ball, the result would have been a lot closer. Credit to Athlone though who finished strongly and it was especially pleasing to see one of our Minors from last year, Jordan Marshment, pop up with an opportunist goal to seal the win and give Athlone the first silverware of 2013.
This was an encouraging start for Athlone's New Manager, Noel O'Brien but he will know there is plenty of work ahead to get us back to the top table of Westmeath football but as they say every journey starts with the first step.
Scorers for Athlone: Joe Fallon (0-4 pts) Jordan Marshment (1-0) Brian Gill (0-2 pts) Paul McEnroe (0-1 point).
