U12 Girls Division 3 Championship Final

Athlone 2-14  St Mary's, Rochfortbridge 0-5

A huge panel of 28 Athlone Under 12 girls, along with many parents and supporters, travelled to Caulry on Saturday to take on St Mary's, Rochfortbridge in the final of Division 3 of the Westmeath under 12 championship.  Athlone's ability to score goals was a feature of the earlier rounds, however due to the excellent play of the St Mary's center-back, goal chances were at a premium in the early stages.  Athlone were leading by 0-6 to 0- 3 nearing half time when Katie Dwyer struck for a major to put some daylight between the sides, although Ciara Murphy was called on to make two excellent saves from point blank distance to keep the Athlone girls in front at half time.  In the second half, despite St Mary's putting up excellent resistance, Athlone were able to stretch their lead with some excellent scores, while the Athlone backs were on top any time the opposition made a break up the field. At the final whistle, Athlone led by 2-14 to 0-5 and, amid scenes of great jubilation, Athlone captain Aine DiTullio was presented with the cup, before everybody returned to Áras Chiaráin for a well-deserved celebration.  Congratulations to all the girls and their mentors, Michael 'Gel' Galvin and Noel Mannion, and thanks to all who helped with the team during the year.

Athlone travelled to Streamstown on Thursday last to take on Kilbeggan/St Josephs in the Girls’ Under 12 league.  Athlone got off to a great start with a goal and a point from Grace McGlynn, but, with the aid of a strong wind, Kilbeggan took over and led by 1-5 to 1-4 at half-time. A great second half performance from the Athlone defence laid the foundation for the win, and goals from Aine DiTullio and Katie Dwyer saw Athlone the victors on a final score of 3-8 to 1-6.
