Athlone v Tang

Athlone Seniors  recorded their second win of the ACFL Division 1 campaign with an excellent come from behind win away to Tang on Sunday morning.  Tang started very well and had moved into a five point lead before a superb goal from a cheeky lob from Mickey Greene brought Athlone back into it.  However Tang went into the break leading 1-6 to 1-3, with Paul Bannon (0-2) and Noel Mulligan (0-1) scoring Athlone’s points.

Starting the second half trailing by three points, while also playing against the wind (and up the hill!), Athlone were certainly up against it but a blistering start saw Seamus Byrne pull back a point within 30 seconds, before Shane Kilroy-Glynn scored a great solo goal to put Athlone into the lead.  Another Paul Bannon point had Athlone two points up, but some missed chances allowed Tang to level it up with about 12 minutes to play.  Athlone responded well again though and Brian Gill, via the crossbar and a Tang defender, finished a great team move to the net to put Athlone ahead by a goal.  This finished the scoring, despite both sides having opportunities in an exciting last 10 minutes.

This was a hard-fought, but well deserved, win for Athlone against strong opponents who had won the last two league meetings between the sides.  Athlone have shown great character to grind out two league wins so far against two very tough opponents so the entire panel and their new mentors deserve great credit for that.
