ACFL Division 4
Athlone 2-11 Caulry 4-10
Our juniors began their league campaign when they hosted Caulry in a
re-arranged Division 4 fixture in Páirc Chiaráin on Friday night last.
Athlone played very well in patches, but also showed plenty of ring-rustiness
and squandered several good goal chances, as well as conceding some soft goals
through slack defending, when going down to a frustrating five-point defeat.
Despite opening the scoring in the first minute through a Sean Dowd point,
Athlone were second- best early on and trailed by 0-3 to 0-1 after five
minutes. However, they then settled and a Josh Beaumont free, followed by
a Fionn Dowd point, brought them level, before three Beaumont scores in quick succession
put them 0-6 to 0-3 ahead midway through the half. Unfortunately, Athlone
also missed some good goal chances in this period and they were made to rue
these misses when a sloppy turnover in defence led to a pointed Caulry free,
which was quickly followed by the game’s opening goal from the subsequent
kickout. A Paul Bannon free brought his side level again, but the
visitors then struck for their second goal just before half time, after Athlone
had turned the ball over in a good attacking position, to lead by 2-4 to 0-7 at
the break.
Early second half points from Josh Beaumont and Sean Dowd reduced the gap to
the minimum, but again their opponents hit three to put some daylight between
the sides. Conor Rushe kept Athlone in touch with a well-taken score,
before a flowing move led to Josh Beaumont finishing to the net from close
range to bring the sides level. Sean Dowd the put his side in front, and
despite Caulry eqaulising soon after, things looked for the home side when
Conor Rushe added a second goal after another good move. This left the
scoreline 2-11 to 2-8 in Athlone’s favour with 15 minutes to play, but they
were unable to push on in the final quarter, and after conceding a pointed
free, they were rocked when Caulry regained the lead with their third goal,
after the Athlone defence had been caught napping when another free came back
off the post. A fourth goal soon followed, after more uncertainty in the
hosts’ defence and, despite creating several good goal chances of their own in
the final minutes, Athlone were unable to add their total and the final score
of the game came from a well-struck Caulry 45 in injury time to leave the final
score 4-10 to 2-11 in their favour.
Athlone’s next game in Division 4 is away to The Downs at 11am next Sunday
morning, while the next outing for the senior squad is against Maryland in
Division 2. This game was originally scheduled for Drumraney at 3pm on
Saturday 24th, but may be moved to Páirc Chiaráin on Friday evening so keep an
eye on social media for confirmation of this change.
