ACFL Division 2

Athlone 1-12 Multyfarnham 1-9

Our senior men made a delayed return to competitive action after last week’s opening round cancellation when they overcame a dogged Multyfarnham side in round two of Division 2 of the All-County League in a wet and windy Páirc Chiaráin on Friday night.

After Shane Allen had opened the scoring with fine solo point, Athlone were rocked when the visitors struck for a goal after the home defence had been caught out by a long ball over the top. Two long-range efforts from John Connellan settled the home side, before John Stapleton put them back in front as they adjusted to the difficult conditions. A brace of scores from Ryan Gaffey, followed by a Richie Greene free stretched the lead further, but Multyfarnham kept in touch with two points in a minute, before Gaffey brought the first half scoring to a close with his third point to leave his 0-8 to 1-2 ahead at the break.

The same player opened the second half scoring with another good effort to put Athlone four points clear, but Multyfarnham now had wind advantage and they halved the deficit with two well-taken points from distance. The hosts needed a response and they got it when Shane Allen sidefooted to the net after Jack Quinn and Sam Omukoro had combined to create the chance. Any hopes that this would mean the end of the Multy challenge were unfounded, however, and three points to just one for Athlone from Ryan Gaffey left just a goal between the sides with 10 minutes still to play. A pair of close-range scores from Jack Quinn kept daylight between the sides, but Athlone were unable to put the game beyond their opponents and two injury time frees left only a kick of the ball in it with a minute’s additional time still to play. Fortunately for Athlone, Paul Bannon secured possession with a superb catch from the final kickout to set up one last attack, and although John Stapleton’s effort initially looked good, it was waved wide, however it proved to be the last kick of the game and Athlone had done enough to secure a hard-fought win on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-9.

Unfortunately, our Division 4 match versus Rosemount fell victim to the inclement weather so our juniors are still waiting for their first game of the year. Next weekend is a free weekend for both teams, with the next scheduled league games on the weekend of March 14-15th when our seniors are due to travel to Drumraney to take on Maryland in Division 2, while our juniors will hope to finally get their season started with an away game at The Downs in Division 4 (exact dates and start times TBC).
