U12 Boys:
Athlone v Clann na nGael
Last Wednesday saw our U11/12 teams host our neighbours from across the Shannon, Clann na nGael, in the latest round of the Walsh Cup. On a perfect evening for football we togged 30 players and given that his was our third outing in eight days, it speaks volumes for the commitment of the players and the massive co-operation of the parents that we continue to turn out such large numbers.

The older group of U12s were missing a few regulars due to holidays and injury but the lads that were there put in an excellent display. The improvement in their play over the past few months is evident for all to see and they are trying to play the game as it should be played with speed and movement. On the night, the lads simply had too much for a very hard working and well coached Clann side and at the final whistle the home side had run out deserved victors.

The U11s match was a very exciting and entertaining one. The visitors flew in to an early lead and looked at one stage that they might run away with things but the Athlone lads upped their performance in the second half and gradually dragged themselves back in to the game and in the end managed a share of the spoils with this very good Clann side. Many thanks to Anthony McManus and the rest of the Clann crew for marking the trip. We hope to repay the favour later in the summer.

The Athlone panel on the night was: Terry Chen, Brian Collins, Cian Dolan, Luke Farrell, John Fleming, Cillian Geary, Kyle Greene, Cathal Hardiman, Toby Heavey, Conor Hughes, Kyle Mahon, Johnny Martin, Lorcan McCormack, Cillian McGowan, Evan McMickan, Dano McMonagle, Owen McNamara, Tiernan Mitchell, Luke Nicholson, Luke O’Connell, Ruairi O’Duibhir, Daniel Omukoro, Ian Rushe, Jason Rushe, Niall Tallon, Jason Ukatu, Brandon Varszegi, Shane Wheatley, Luke Whelan and Brandon Wykes.
