U12 Boys:
The U12s made the long trip to Killucan for the second round of the Westmeath Division 1 league on Wednesday 26th April last and came home with two good victories against a depleted home team. Due to Confirmation in the area, the hosts were missing a number of regulars which left them vulnerable to a hungry Athlone squad. The visitors togged out 32 players on the night split evenly between u11s and U12s and both sides performed very well. On a dry and warm evening, the energy shown by the lads was excellent and the fact that each Athlone side had 5 or 6 subs to roll on and off meant that at the long whistle there was a wide margin between the teams. Many thanks to Killucan lads for hosting the game on an inconvenient night for them. We look forward to returning the favour when they visit Pairc Chiarain later in the year.

The Athlone panel on the night was: Brian Collins, Cian Dolan, Luke Farrell, Ciaran Finlay, John Fleming, Cillian Geary, Kyle Greene, Cathal Hardiman, Toby Heavey, Conor Hughes, Matthew Keane, Josh Kenny, Ben Manning, Johnny Martin, Lorcan McCormack, Cillian McGowan, Evan McMickan, Dano McMonagle, Owen McNamara, Kian Mitchell, Tiernan Mitchell, Luke Nicholson, Luke O’Connell, Ruairi O’Duibhir, Daniel Omukoro, Piaras Rohan, Ian Rushe, Jason Rushe, Niall Tallon, Jason Ukatu, Brandon Varszegi, Shane Wheatley and Luke Whelan.

U12 Boys:
The lads had their first match in the 2017 Walsh Cup against the host club Ballinasloe on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning last. This was without doubt the best performance of the year from this very hard working group. This competition is a little different from what we are used to in the Westmeath League with two 11-a-side games being played at the same time between the U12s and the U11s of each club. The lower numbers and tighter pitch seemed to suit the Athlone Boys on the day as they were at it from the first whistle and put in a performance that was eye-catching for its skill level. From the kick outs to the score taking, all aspects of the game were very impressive. Both teams really showed their skills and ran out deserved winners on score-lines of 4-14 to 1-07 in the U12 game and 2-15 to 1-05 in the U11 game. From 1 to 32, the lads put in brilliant performances and were a credit to their club.

The Athlone panel on the day was: Brian Collins, Cian Dolan, Luke Farrell, Ciaran Finlay, John Fleming, Kyle Greene, Cathal Hardiman, Toby Heavey, Conor Hughes, Josh Kenny, Ben Manning, Johnny Martin, Lorcan McCormack, Cillian McGowan, Evan McMickan, Dano McMonagle, Owen McNamara, Kian Mitchell, Tiernan Mitchell, Luke Nicholson, Luke O’Connell, Ruairi O’Duibhir, Daniel Omukoro, Mark Rockett, Piaras Rohan, Ian Rushe, Jason Rushe, Niall Tallon, Jason Ukatu, Shane Wheatley, Luke Whelan and Brandon Wykes.

Athlone U12 Girls
Athlone travelled to Streamstown on Thursday last to take on Kilbeggan/St Josephs in the Girls’ Under 12 league.  Athlone got off to a great start with a goal and a point from Grace McGlynn, but, with the aid of a strong wind, Kilbeggan took over and led by 1-5 to 1-4 at half-time. A great second half performance from the Athlone defence laid the foundation for the win, and goals from Aine DiTullio and Katie Dwyer saw Athlone the victors on a final score of 3-8 to 1-6.
Athlone: Ciara Murphy, Abbie Farrell, Aoife Mc Givern, Kayla Dunne, Abi Joyce, Orla Surlis, Aine Martin, Aine Di Tullio, Kenzi Francis, Kelly Donoghue, Katie Dwyer, Gemma Mannion, Grace Mc Glynn, Ciara Hughes, Sarah Mc Namara, Jillian Begley, Merisa Kiripati, Lore Okedugha, Aobha Kenny, Aine Galvin.
