Minor League Division 1
The Downs 5-11 Athlone 4-8.
The minors faced a tough first outing of the year away to last year's beaten minor finalists The Downs. However it proved to provide a good workout for both teams on a crisp Sunday morning. Josh Beaumont scored a fine individual point to get Athlone off the mark. The Downs settled into the game with 3 points in a row before two quick-fire goals from David Cleary and a clinical Beaumont finish put Athlone in command. The Downs finished the half with 1-2 sandwiched between a Mark Egan free. Shane Allen ensured Athlone went into half-time level with 2 incredible blocks near the end of the half.

The second half proved to be a goal fest!  Some poor defending mixed with fortuitous finishing saw the Downs net 4 goals. However, Athlone responded with 2 quality majors of their own; the first a ruthless individual effort from Mark Egan, the second a great penalty finish on the stroke of full time from Kieran Colclough. The game finished 5-11 to 4-8. Athlone's second half points coming from Benny Martin, Josh Beaumont (2) and a great score from Donagh Prendergast. The game leaves this talented squad with a lot of work to do but they showed some glimpses of promise for a successful season ahead.

Team: John Duddy, Paddy McGettigan, Diarmuid Martin, Joseph Devins, Niall Doolan, Shane Allen, David Cleary (1-0), Luke Kelly, Anthony Johnson, Donagh Prendergast (0-1), Mark Egan (1-1), Kieran Colclough (1-1), Josh Beaumount (1-3), Enda Daly, Benny Martin (0-1).
Subs used: Aaron Forde, Kevin Cleary, Rytis Liaukevicius, Declan McCormack.

Our senior men had their first outing of 2017 when they took on Western Gaels of Roscommon in a challenge on Saturday night.  Despite several absentees due to county commitments and illness, Athlone still managed to field a strong and sizeable panel and a very late Daniel Reid goal gave them a 3-7 to 2-9 win in what was a very useful exercise against a strong Western Gaels side who featured plenty of intercountry experience.

The opening round of the ACFL is scheduled for this coming weekend with our Division 1 team scheduled to play Rosemount in Páirc Chiaráin at 8pm on Friday the 10th and the Division 4 team due to play St Paul's in Clonmellon at 3.30pm on Saturday 11th.

Well done to John Egan, Alan Gaughan and Noel Mulligan who all featured for Westmeath in their Allianz League opener against Carlow.
