U12 Boys:
The season finally got underway for our U12 Boys on Wednesday evening last when we hosted near neighbours Caulry at Pairc Chiarain in a challenge match arranged by the County Board. Unfortunately, due to other commitments and injuries, the visitors were limited to just one team so it meant that the 30 Athlone players that turned up were split in two teams and each team played a twenty five minute half each. This proved to be a great opener to the season for the Athlone boys as the Caulry side that took the pitch were well coached and organised and displayed great skill. It meant that the lads had to dig deep to keep in the match and it was very satisfying to see some of the younger members of the group stepping up to the plate in this their first match at the U12 grade. Likewise, last year’s U11s showed that they haven’t lost any of their desire by putting in a very solid performance to help ease past a very gallant Caulry side in the final quarter. Many thanks to Niall Shortall and the rest of the lads from Caulry for making the trip. The Athlone lads know that there is plenty of work ahead but they have never shirked from that in the past and the season holds plenty of promise for this talented bunch.

The Athlone panel on the night was: Terry Chen, Brian Collins, Cian Dolan, Luke Farrell, John Fleming, Cillian Geary, Kyle Greene, Cathal Hardiman, Toby Heavey, Conor Hughes, Matthew Keane, Josh Kenny, Johnny Martin, Evan McMickan, Rory McMickan, Dano McMonagle, Owen McNamara, Kian Mitchell, Tiernan Mitchell,  Luke Nicholson, Luke O’Connell, Daniel Omukoro, Piaras Rohan, Ian Rushe, Jason Rushe, Niall Tallon, Jason Ukatu, Brandon Varszegi, Shane Wheatley and Luke Whelan.

U16 Boys Division 2 League:
Athlone 2-11 Rosemount 2-09
Our U16s got their league campaign off to a good start last Monday night, with a 2 point win over Rosemount. Athlone started the game brightly and took an early lead thanks to a point from full back Eamon Martin. They dominated much of the first half, but poor shooting meant they were just 4 points ahead at half time. The second half was a much closer affair, with Rosemount enjoying much more possession. An early goal for the away side left the game in the balance, and a close and tense second half followed. The game was level with just 4 minutes remaining, but late points from Andy Beaumount and the very influential Conor Rushe seen the Athlone lads finish with 2 points to spare at the final whistle.
Team: Kenny Davis, Liam West, Eamon Martin, TJ Okodugha, Kolo Kiripati, Conor Rushe, Reme Okodugha, Shane Reid, Michael Byrne, Brian Hughes, Andy Beaumount, Dylan Rushe, Shaun Fox, Raphael Salaja, Chulain Dowd, Ben Killian, Javier Kieran.
Scorers: Eamon Martin 0-2, Andy Beaumount 0-3, Chulain Dowd 0-1, Brian Hughes 0-2, Michael Byrne 0-2, Raphael Salaja 1-0, Conor Rushe 0-1, Shane Reid 1-0

This was the first game of the season for Athlone and they came away with a 1 point win against Tubberclaire. It was a game played from end to end with some excellent scores coming from both sides.
