 U13 Leinster Cross County Shield:

Our U13 Boys made the long, but ultimately successful, journey to Sallins in Co. Kildare on Tuesday evening last to play the final of the U13 Leinster Cross County Shield. A competition which saw us pitted against teams from Ferbane/Belmont in Co. Offaly, St Vincent’s in Co. Longford and Carbury in Co. Kildare in the group stages followed by a home tie against Trim, Co. Meath in the semi final stage culminated in victory against Sallins in the final where the lads produced an excellent display of open attacking football where well supported team play was backed up by some tenacious defending.

Despite dominating the first half, the visitors seemed to be suffering from “bus-lag” following the long journey as their shooting boots were off early on meaning there was just four points between the teams at half time. However, the second half saw the lads perform superbly throughout and they ran out very worthy winners. It was a very tired bunch that arrived back at Páirc Chiaráin late on a school night but the fact that they brought the silverware with them made it easier to bear. This was a fantastic display from a very talented and hard working group of young Athlone footballers. They deserve massive credit as they continue to bring credit to themselves and their club. Many thanks to all the parents for their continued support.

The Athlone panel on the night was: Brian Collins, Luke Farrell, Cillian Geary, Cathal Hardiman, Johnny Martin, Lorcan McCormack, Dano McMonagle, Owen McNamara, Kian Mitchell, Luke Nicholson, Luke O’Connell, Daniel Omukoro, Piaras Rohan, Ian Rushe, Jason Rushe, Niall Tallon, Jason Ukatu, Shane Wheatley and Luke Whelan.

U14 Girls Feile

Athlone GAA welcomed 9 teams for the Westmeath U14 Girls Feile competition on Sunday April 29th.  There were 2 groups as follows:  Division 1 group consisted of Coralstown/Kinegad, Garrycastle, Killucan and Moate.

In mixed weather conditions there was some great football on display with Kinnegad and Killucan making it through to the Division 1 Semi Finals and Athlone and Milltownpass through to the Division 2 Semi finals.  Athlone Girls gave a super team performance throughout, winning 3 out of 4 games. There were some outstanding individual performances with great skill on show throughout the pitch.  Thanks to all who helped on the day, the hospitality was much appreciated by all the visiting clubs who appreciated the tea/coffee, sandwiches and goodies provided.  Athlone are through to the Semi-Final on Tuesday at 7 pm in Kinnegad against Ballycomoyle.

U10 Boys Blitz

The U9/10’s kicked off the start of the Westmeath GO Games in style on Tuesday evening in Ballynacargy  in tough playing conditions.  First up was a spirited Milltownpass team but were out muscled and defeated  by a very strong committed Athlone side.  Athlone 2-6 Milltownpass 1-2.

Our second game was a much more hotly contested game against stiff opposition in the shape of Coralstown/Kinnegad.  The first half was a close affair, but strong work ethic and some excellent football displayed by our Athlone boys was to prove the difference in the end.

Athlone 3-7 Coralstown/Kinnegad 3-1.

On the night every player showed great determination and there was some fine displays of scoring and defending on show.
