ACFL Division 1

Athlone 3-12 Coralstown-Kinnegad 0-8

On a perfect night for football, the home side came charging out of the blocks and had four superbly taken points on the board from Stephen Ward (0-2), John Connellan and Paul Bannon before Bannon goaled from close range after a David Fagan pile driver had come back off the crossbar.  The visitors’ defence really struggled with the power and pace of the Athlone attacks in the early stages and two further Connellan points stretched the lead to eight points after only 12 minutes.  Surprisingly however, these were to prove Athlone’s final scores of the first half as the powerful direct play and excellent finishing of the opening minutes give way to some poor shot selection and a tendency to go for goals when points were on.  Instead the only further scores in the opening period were two Kinnegad points from frees to leave Athlone leading by 1-6 to 0-3 at the break.

After going almost 20 minutes without scoring in the first half, it took only 20 seconds for Athlone to find their shooting boots again when Daniel Reid landed a great point from out on the wing, after he had fought hard to create the opportunity.  Excellent scores from half-backs Shane Kilroy-Glynn and Jordan Marshment stretched the lead further and the home side put the game out of reach in the 40th minute when another defender, corner-back Matthew Darling, got on the end of a Paul Bannon pass to finish clinically to the net.  The visitors did add some fine points of their own in response, but points from John Stapleton and John Connellan kept the scoreboard ticking over for the hosts.  Sam Omukoro then blasted home their third goal, following some neat interplay with Connellan, while a Daniel Reid point on the stroke of full-time saw Athlone victorious on a scoreline of 3-12 to 0-8.
