Athlone 0-14 Caulry 1-9

Our Junior men’s team notched their second victory of this year’s Championship with a hard-fought victory over neighbours Caulry in Páirc Chiaráin on Saturday night.  Athlone led by 0-8 to 0-7 after a high quality first half, and stretched their lead early in the second period with an excellent Tadhg Prendergast point, but fell behind when a botched short kick out led to a Caulry goal.  The home team responded well to this setback however and four fine points from play from veterans Emmet Collins, Mickey Greene (0-2) and Joe Fallon saw them lead by three points as the game entered its final five minutes.  Two points in quick succession from the visitors cut the lead back to the minimum, but the Athlone defence did well prevent an equaliser and a late Emmet Collins point left Athlone the victors on a final score of 0-14 to 1-9.

Athlone:  Conal Sheeran, Shane Galvin, David Fagan, Dermot Pigott, Eoin Jordan, Andy Lynam, Kieran Rigney, Aidan St John, Fionn Dowd (0-1), Benny Martin, Joe Fallon (0-3), Dylan Lynch (0-2), Tadhg Prendergast (0-1), Mickey Greene (0-2), Richie Greene (0-3) Subs Used:  Emmet Collins (0-2), Davie Connellan.

ACFL Div 1
Mullingar Shamrocks 0-16 Athlone 1-06

An understrength Athlone team were comprehensively beaten by a strong Mullingar Shamrocks side in Springfield on Sunday evening.  Trailing by eight points after a disappointing first half, during which they failed to raise a white flag and had only a John Stapleton goal to show for their efforts, Athlone improved after the break and finally got some scores on the board.  However they were unable to reduce the deficit in any meaningful way and Shamrocks ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 0-16 to 1-6.

Athlone:  Conor Devaney (0-1), Eoin Maher, Damo Kelly, Danny  Lynam, Eoin Jordan, Matty Darling, Fergal Murray (0-2), John Stapleton (1-1), Andy Lynam, Jordan Marshment (0-1),  Daniel Reid, Dylan Lynch, Kieran Rigney, Jack Quinn, Stephen Ward. Subs Used:  Darren Costello, Richie Greene (0-1), Conal Sheeran, Shane Galvin.

U12 Girls
Athlone U12 girls had their 2nd last game of the group stage away to Kilbeggan. Playing with the breeze, Kilbeggan  got off to a great start with a goal and a point. Athlone replied with 2 points to reduce the lead, but Kilbeggan added another 3 goals and 2 points, with Athlone only scoring another 2 points in the first half, leaving the score 4-03 to 0-04 to Kilbeggan at the break.

In the 2nd half Athlone played much better, scoring 2-02 and keeping Kilbeggan scoreless. Athlone could have scored another few goals only for the strong performances from the Kilbeggan goal keeper and full back. Despite a much better performance from Athlone, Kilbeggan held out to win 4-03 to 2-06.  Athlone now have one game left in the group stage Vs Goldsmith Girls (Tubberclaire), which will be played in the next 2 weeks
