ACFL Division 1:
Athlone 1-9 Tang 0-20

Our seniors suffered their third defeat of this year’s league campaign when they were beaten by an in-form Tang side in this round four fixture played in Tang in perfect conditions on Sunday morning..  Athlone got off to a dream start with a Josh Beaumont goal straight from the throw-in, but the home side settled and struck some fine scores to lead by 0-7 to 1-2 after 15 minutes, with Athlone’s points coming from two superbly-struck placed balls from Kieran Colclough.  The visitors were then dealt a blow when Diarmuid Martin was sent off after receiving a yellow and black card in quick succession, but they restricted Tang to just two points in the second quarter and another Kieran Colclough free left three points between the sides at the break, 0-9 to 1-3 in Tang’s favour.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Athlone more than held their own in the opening stages of the second period, and two excellent scores each from Mark Egan and Kieran Colclough meant that they trailed by just two, 0-12 to 1-7, at the midway point of the half.  However, just as had happened at the same stage of the opening period, Athlone’s numbers were reduced even further when James Finlass was dismissed for a second yellow card.  With a two-man disadvantage, Athlone were unable to contain the home side’s attack and Tang added several late scores to run out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 0-20 to 1-9.

Westmeath Senior Footballers:
Congratulations to Noel Mulligan and the Westmeath Senior Football team who gained promotion from Division 3 to Division 2 of the Allianz League with a hard-fought draw against Louth in Drogheda on Saturday.  Best of luck to Noel and the lads in the Division 3 Final versus Laois in Croke Park next Saturday afternoon, April 6th (throw-in at 4.45pm).
