Boys’ U16 Championship Division 1 Semi-Final:

Athlone 0-8 St Loman’s 3-6

Our Under 16 Boys’ championship campaign came to a disappointing end in Ballymore on Saturday afternoon when they were defeated by a physically strong and well-organised St Loman’s team in the division 1 championship semi-final.

In perfect conditions for football, it was the Mullingar boys who opened the scoring with a point after two minutes, but Athlone responded almost immediately when Eamon Martin and Mark Tallon combined to set up Enda Daly for the equaliser.  Both sides then missed good goal chances before Donagh Prendergast finished off another fine move to give the Sky Blues the lead for the first and only time.  Athlone had a chance to stretch their lead soon after but the opposing keeper pulled off a fine save to deny Josh Beaumont and instead it was St Loman’s who struck the first goal of the game after 17 minutes.  Another point put a goal between the sides, but Athlone finished the half strongly and three points from frees from Donagh Prendergast saw the sides go in level at the break.

Just as in the first half, it was St Loman’s who opened the scoring after two minutes, but some bad wides meant that they were unable to stretch their lead further before Kieran Colclough brought Athlone level with a long-range free.  It was then Athlone’s turn to miss some chances to retake the lead and they were made to pay for these misses when St Loman’s struck for their second goal after 40 minutes, while it took a good save from John Duddy to prevent the Dark Blues from doubling their lead soon after.  St Loman’s did add another point to put four between the sides, and despite Donagh Prendergast keeping Athlone in touch with an excellent solo point, the momentum was with the Mullingar boys and their third goal arrived with 10 mins remaining.  Athlone piled on the pressure in the closing minutes, but could only manage one more point, scored by Thomas Roper, as they struggled to create the goal chances necessary to claw back the deficit.  Two points in injury time finally put the game beyond the Athlone lads and St Loman’s ran out winners on a scoreline of 3-6 to 0-8.
