Athlone U 12s
The curtain finally came down on the 2016 U12 Boys season with defeat to Moate in the A final of the U12 Jim McHugh Tournament played in Garrycastle on Wednesday night last. Unbelievably, this was the thirtieth game this group of players played this year and it is fantastic to see how much they’ve improved since the first training session on March 13th last. Almost seven months to the day, the lads lined out against a very strong Moate side and had to give second best on the night. Despite their best efforts it was just one of those nights for the lads where it just didn’t happen. But one thing we learned this year is that these lads will battle to the end and that is a fantastic trait in a young footballer. We managed to get some game time for all twenty six players on the panel and judging by the disappointment on display, we will see the same twenty six players at training next March keen to continue their progress in the Blue of Athlone. At the final whistle it was wonderful to see club captain Noeley Mulligan, who had watched from the line, chat to the lads and congratulate them for their efforts and encourage them to keep their heads high. That was a magnificent display of leadership from Noeley and will reap benefits down the line. And so as the lads trundled down to the presentation, the heads were that much higher and the chests puffed out that bit more as they behaved with the good grace they have displayed all year in congratulating the victorious Moate lads. They are a great bunch of honest lads and are a credit to their families and their club. Finally, we wish to say a big word of thanks to Mark Redmond and his committee for running an excellent tournament and we hope to see them again next year.
The Athlone panel on the night was:
Conor Devins, Rian Dully, Ryan Fallon, Luke Farrell, Cian Geary, Eoin Hardiman, Toby Heavey, Josh Kenny, Johnny Martin, Donagh McCormack, Dano McMonagle, Owen McNamara, Kian Mitchell, Luke O’Connell, Oisin O’Sullivan, Daniel Omukoro, Mark Rockett, Jason Rushe, Tom Sheridan, Alan Sweeney, Niall Tallon, Adam Temple, Jason Ukatu, Justin Walsh, Luke Whelan and Brandon White.
Athlone GAA Round-Up U9/U10
After 6 months of competitive action our u9’s and 10’s have now would up their season. To close off the year the team competed in the “A” final of the Tormey Solicitors Clann na nGael tournament. A tournament in which they had only lost 2 out of 16 competitive games over the course of the year. Waiting for them in the final were Tubberclair GAA club. After two very sporting and competitive games Athlone fell short on an aggregate scoreline, winning our u9 fixture but losing out on the u10 side. The club has no doubt that the future is bright for these set of players as the dedication, commitment and skill they have shown throughout the year is an example to all. The club would also like to thank the continued support of all parents and guardians who have always been at hand to ferry players all over the county. We hope to see all these players again in 2017.
