Athlone U12s

Athlone U12 Boys made the short trip to Castledaly last Sunday morning to play the latest round of the Westmeath U12 league. In conditions more akin to February or March, the teams took the pitch to gale force winds and the imminent threat of rain. Fortunately, Athlone won the toss and elected to play with the wind in the first half and this proved a wise decision as by the half time whistle the lads had built up a commanding lead thanks to some patient play and accurate shooting when the chances came. The second moiety was a completely different challenge but one that the mentors were very pleased with as the lads showed excellent application in restricting their opponents to very few chances. The tackling, blocking and tracking back was excellent and when the counter attack was on, the lads broke forward with very intelligent use of the ball and by the long whistle the lads had ran out well deserved winners. Many thanks to Michael Dolan and the Castledaly lads for the game.

The Athlone panel on the day was: Conor Devins, Ryan Fallon, Luke Farrell, Cian Geary, Eoin Hardiman, Toby Heavey, Josh Kenny, Johnny Martin, Dano McMonagle, Kian Mitchell, Luke O’Connell, Daniel Omukoro, Mark Rockett, Alan Sweeney, Jason Ukatu, Luke Whelan and Brandon White.

Athlone U11 Boys played the latest round of the U11 League on Monday evening and travelled to Streamstown to play Kilbeggan/St Josephs. This was one of the best performances of the year for this group of talented young footballers and it needed to be as Kilbeggan/St Josephs put up a stern test for the lads. Some of the lads were playing their second game in 24 hours but they made light of any tiredness and kept going from  first whistle to last and when the handshakes were over they had earned a very satisfying victory over a gallant Kilbeggan/St Josephs team. Thanks to Ronan and the other mentors for a great game.

The Athlone panel on the day was:  Luke Farrell, Toby Heavey, Josh Kenny, Johnny Martin, Dano McMonagle, Owen McNamara, Kian Mitchell, Luke O’Connell, Niall Tallon, Jason Ukatu and Luke Whelan.

U12 Girls

Athlone U12 Girls travelled to Ballycomoyle to play the quarter final knock out game.  Missing a few regular players, Athlone came under pressure from the outset with Ballycomoyle getting off to a very good start with a goal in the first few minutes, going on to build up a sizeable lead by half time.

Athlone fought back bravely in the 2nd half with some good performances throughout the field, but despite their best efforts, Athlone were unable to contain Ballycomoyle who ran out comfortable winners in the end.  Despite the defeat good fun was had by all on the day.

Well done to all the girls for their efforts throughout the year and for giving it their best in Division 1.
