Club Notes - 9th September

posted 10 Sept 2019, 09:50 by Athlone GAA

Athlone U9’s host Barna and Clann na nGael.

The future would appear bright for the three clubs which took part in an U9 blitz in Pairc Chiaran on Sunday morning.  Athlone welcomed our neighbours from across the Shannon, Clann na NGael and the men from just west of Galway city, Barna.

Each club fielded two ten-a-side teams and the determination and skill shown by all was a joy to behold. Each game was evenly contested and the only winner on the day was football.  For Athlone it was a pleasure to have such good young footballers from Roscommon and Galway come and test their skills against us on our home soil. Athlone and Clann na nGael have a long established relationship in terms of underage blitzes and long may it continue.  Former Coosan NS principal Michael Lydon was in charge of Barna and not surprisingly they were a well drilled and talented side.

From an Athlone point of view it was evident that great progress is being made by this group of players. Practice makes perfect and the more time these young men practise their catching and kicking (especially at home!) the better they will become.  All players and parents were treated to some well-deserved refreshments in the clubhouse afterwards.  The good behaviour and manners of all the young men, both on the field and in the clubhouse afterwards, was something their parents should be rightly proud of.

A big ‘Thank You’ to the 20 plus volunteers who worked hard on Sunday morning in car-parks, kitchens and on pitches to ensure the blitz ran smoothly and to those who brought food etc. Much appreciated.

Our U8’s and U10’s host St Lomans, Mullingar next Saturday morn in another ‘Go Games’ blitz. Details to be confirmed.

Athlone Blues- Rory Slevin, Antonio Canton-Quinn, Liam Ambrose, Cian Mannion, Paddy Stokes, Daniel Donegan, Fearghal Kelly, Micheal Cunningham, Harry Cunningham, Jack Costello, Evan Martin-Cummins.

Boys U14 Championship

Congratulations to our u14 squad who had a hard fought win against Millmore Gaels on Thursday last in the Championship. Trailing by 7 points with 10 minutes to go the lads dug deep and never gave up and came out with a fantastic victory. Credit must go to both sets of players on a superb game of football. Up next are St Lomans in the final round.

Congratulations to the Westmeath Camogie team who won the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship after a superb second half comeback against Galway in the final in Croke Park on Sunday. Well done to everybody involved and best of luck in Senior Championship next year.

Congratulations also to Tom and Paschal and all the crew in The Bounty who celebrated 10 years in business recently. Thanks for all the support you’ve given to the club over the years and best of luck for the next 10 years and beyond.
